Braves Split Two Matches Friday with Shutout Win over FAMU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Alcorn head coach Darnesha Moore picked up her first career victory Friday as the Alcorn State University men's tennis program defeated Florida A&M 4-0 before falling to Southern Miss 5-1.
 
Senior Gjorgji Popovski took care of business at the top as he won a pair of matches at No. 1 singles and also a doubles match. He teamed with junior Stojan Stojanovski to defeat FAMU's Robert Hayden and Rodeny Sturgis 6-1.
 
Popovski ousted FAMU's Petr Cervinka in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Later in the day, Popovski won again as he came back to defeat USM's Hsiang Yi Wang 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 at the top position.
 
A pair of other Braves also won singles matches. Freshman Lucas Dini kept rolling with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Eliott Ekindi at No. 2 singles to improve to 2-1 on the year. Stojanovski, after winning in doubles, cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Hayden at No. 3 singles.
 
The men will be in action again Tuesday when they travel to Nicholls for a 2 p.m. start. The women head to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday for an 4 p.m. match.
