Alcorn Supports Extra Table Hunger Challenge, Yolks On You

LORMAN, Miss. – Members of the Alcorn State University Department of Athletics staff participated in the Yolks On You Hunger Challenge, created by Extra Table.

Extra Table is a non-profit organization committed to ending hunger in the state of Mississippi. It provides food pantries and soup kitchens with the new and healthy food they need to feed the hungry in their community.

As part of the challenge, staff members of the Alcorn athletic department cracked eggs on their heads to raise awareness about hunger in Mississippi.

Participating from Alcorn was Director of Athletics Derek Horne, Assistant Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Academic Services Cyrus K. Russ, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information Robbie Kleinmuntz, Head Football Coach Fred McNair, Head Softball Coach Josef Rankin, Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Jimmy Joseph and Head Tennis Coach Darnesha Moore.

According to extratable.org, there are over 600,000 Mississippians struggling with hunger. Extra Table currently provides new, healthy food to 62 partner pantries.

Extra Table Founder and Chef Robert St. John said, "Our feeding and fundraising efforts are important #NowMoreThanEver. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 global pandemic and Mississippi falling under a stay at home order, Extra Table has seen a 30 – 50 % increase in requests for food from pantry partners statewide. This increase is directly related to the schools closing, reduction of hours, positions eliminated, and businesses struggling to stay open. Due to these changes, individuals and families have been forced to rely on food pantries and soup kitchens, many for the first time in their lives. These are unprecedented times!"
