Alcorn Launches Brave Strong, Drive for Athletics Fundraising Initiative

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University began its Brave Strong, Drive for Athletics initiative with a goal of raising funds for the department of athletics.
 
Alcorn's goal is to raise a total of $170,000 across all of its athletics programs and administration. The funds will help offset the cost of travel, apparel, equipment and more.
 
Alcorn sponsors 15 sports and is the home to 276 student-athletes.
 
"The COVID-19 pandemic created a financial crisis that we have not seen in college athletics. We have had to take the unprecedented steps, which includes reducing operating expenses significantly. We are working through significant revenue losses from reduced NCAA and SWAC distributions, and games being eliminated and projections of reduced capacity," said Derek Horne, director of athletics. "We want to continue to give our student-athletes, coaches, and staff the best opportunity for sustained success as we navigate these very challenging times."
 
Alcorn is coming off a great year, both athletically and academically. In 2019-20, Alcorn won 22 SWAC Player of the Week awards as an athletic department in the shortened year. The football team won its second consecutive SWAC Championship and fourth in the last six years. The Braves are also the six-time defending SWAC East Division champions.
 
In the classroom, more than half of the student-athletes earned SWAC Honor Roll, with 149 student-athletes scoring above a 3.0 GPA. Alcorn graduated 73 student-athletes (31 in the fall, 42 in the spring), and 65 student-athletes scored a semester 4.0 GPA in the fall and/or spring.
 
All of that momentum was halted abruptly in March when Alcorn last saw any of its teams suit up and take the field. However, Alcorn is committed to the excellence and success of its student-athletes moving forward and to providing the ultimate experience on campus.
 
Alcorn is set to play all of its sports in the spring, in conjunction with SWAC's schedule for all 10 of its member institutions.
