THIBODAUX, La. – A quick turnaround is what's in store for the Alcorn State University softball program as it heads to Nicholls for a 5 p.m. game Tuesday at Swanner Field.

"We are looking to get back at it against another quality opponent. Coach [Angel] Santiago has built a solid program. They always have some pretty good players," said Alcorn head coach
Josef Rankin.

It will be the fifth game in four days for Alcorn (1-3), which opened its season with four games over the weekend against Tennessee State and North Alabama.

The high point of the weekend was a season-opening victory over Tennessee State 5-2. Alcorn trailed late, but rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to earn the victory. Senior
Ambria Dorsey pitched a complete-game to grab the win.

"For us, I really want to see some progress. We need to learn from this past weekend and that experience has to make us better," Rankin said.

Junior
Desirea Lindsey hit for a .375 average and .444 on-base percentage to lead Alcorn over the weekend. She also stole a base and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the outfield.

"We need to create more opportunities offensively and find consistency on defense. Our energy has been pretty good, but that's not enough. We need more. Embrace the pressure. Embrace the competition. Go give yourself a chance," Rankin said.

In the Alcorn career record book, Dorsey sits at No. 6 in strikeouts (149), eighth in starts (40), eighth in innings pitched (250.1) and 10th in wins (10). Hitting-wise, junior
Amari Ramsey is eighth in homers (9) and ninth in doubles (21). Ramsey is a Preseason All-Conference First-Team selection, along with senior
Simone McKinney.

Nicholls is looking to bounce back from an 0-5 weekend in Jacksonville, Florida, where it faced stiff competition. The Lady Colonels dropped two games to both San Diego State and Jacksonville, and one to Villanova.

Nicholls finished 34-22 overall and 21-6 in the Southland Conference last season.

The Lady Braves and the Lady Colonels will square off for the sixth consecutive year and the 23rd time overall. Alcorn is looking for its first win in the all-time series.

"Tomorrow is another opportunity for us to be better and compete," Rankin said.
