Alcorn Men & Women Beat MVSU to Begin Conference

JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs begin the SWAC Round-Up on a high-note with a pair of victories over Mississippi Valley State on Friday at Parham Bridges Tennis Center.
 
The Lady Braves swept the Delta Devilettes 4-0, while the Braves cruised to a 5-1 win over the Delta Devils.
 
The women started it off by dominating in doubles. Senior Alessandra Maganuco and sophomore Stefany Grlj posted a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, and senior Barbara Cabo and freshman Tangia Riley-Codrington followed suit with a 6-0 victory at No. 2 to clinch it.
 
At No. 3 doubles, the team of junior Sofia Ievleva and sophomore Olecia James led 5-0 when Alcorn clinched and the match went unfinished.
 
The Lady Braves kept it going in singles. Maganuco and Grlj breezed to 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and 2, respectively. Alcorn ended it with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles by Riley-Codrington, her first collegiate win.
 
On the men's side, the Braves tallied a pair of quick victories at doubles to clinch. Senior Gjorgji Popovski and sophomore Santiago Rocca were flawless 6-0 at No. 1, and junior Stojan Stojanovski and sophomore Lucas Dini also won 6-0 at No. 2.
 
In singles, the Braves didn't drop a game in any of the complete matches. Popovski, Stojanovski, Dini and Rocca all came out on top 6-0, 6-0.
 
The Lady Braves will continue SWAC Round-Up on Saturday when they square off with Southern at 10 a.m. at Parham Bridges. Both the men and women will wrap it up Sunday against Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
