YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Despite outhitting Incarnate Word 9-3, the Cardinals scored two runs in the seventh inning to steal a 3-2 decision from the Alcorn State University softball program on Friday at the Youngsville Sports Complex in the Mardi Gras Mambo opener.
Â
The Lady Braves (5-8) trailed 1-0 in the seventh inning when the bats came to life. Back-to-back singles by junior
Desirea Lindsey and senior
Simone McKinney put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. With two outs, junior
Malea Dickerson delivered a clutch two-RBI double to put Alcorn ahead 2-1.
Â
Though in the bottom half, UIW (5-5) took advantage of two errors to answer with two runs. The score was tied 2-2 with two outs and a runner on a third when a ground ball couldn't be turned into an out to end the game.
Â
"Today boiled down to executing. We had two innings where we were not very clean defensively and that led to UIW scoring some runs. We left some opportunities out there offensively, but there in the seventh Mo [Dickerson] did a great job of coming up with a two-out hit. We just need to be cleaner in all phases. We made plays early-on and it's just a matter of finishing," said Alcorn head coach
Josef Rankin.
Â
Dickerson went 2-for-3 at the plate and was one of three Lady Braves to turn in multi-hit games. Lindsey and McKinney were both 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
Senior
Ambria Dorsey pitched the whole way. She did not allow an earned run in 6.2 innings and struck out five. Dorsey moved up one spot to fifth all-time in school history in career strikeouts with 157.
Â
"Ambria pitched extremely well. We were actually very good defensively outside of those two innings. I was proud of her effort, but we just have to finish," Rankin said.
Â
With a hit in the game, junior
Amari Ramsey is just 11 away from reaching 100 in her career. Ramsey is the reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week winner.
Â
It was just the third all-time meeting between Alcorn and IUW, and two of them have been decided by one run.
Â
Alcorn will resume the tournament Saturday with two more games. Alcorn will face Nicholls at 3 p.m. at Pixus Field, and Southeastern Louisiana at 5 p.m. at Lafayette General Health Field.
