Mississippi State Tops Alcorn in Tournament Finale

STARKVILLE, Miss. – To conclude the Alex Wilcox Memorial, the Alcorn State University softball program fell 9-1 to Mississippi State on Sunday at Nusz Park.

Sophomore Brenn Ursin pitched the whole way. She gave up just two earned runs against a dangerous MSU lineup.

"Outstanding effort by Brenn Ursin. Outstanding! Two earned runs and five hits – come on. Against that lineup?" Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin said. "I thought Desirea Lindsey made some great catches in left field all weekend. She did really well."

Alcorn mustered four hits in the game from seniors Brittney Triplett and Alexsis Ramirez, and juniors Ashley Arnold and Desirea Lindsey.

The Lady Braves got on the board in their first at-bat. Triplett started the game with a single and advanced to third on an error. She came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Amari Ramsey to put Alcorn up 1-0.

Though, the Bulldogs took advantage of miscues defensively and scored seven runs in two innings off four errors.

"We manufactured a run in the first to get ahead, but we have to do a better job of having a shut down inning. We didn't give up a hit in the bottom half and we are down 3-1," Rankin said. "You know, we haven't had a full practice on our field since MLK Day and that doesn't help, but the defense is really about 'want to.' It's about how bad I want to make this play."

The Lady Braves had a chance to score more in the second inning but couldn't get the timely hit. They loaded up the bases on hits by Arnold and Lindsey, plus an error, but the frame ended with a ground out to third.

The Lady Braves will take on another SEC opponent on Wednesday when they travel to Alabama for a 6 p.m. on the SEC Network+ and ESPN3.

"We will see if Wednesday happens in Alabama, but we will take some time to evaluate some things and find something that will be more consistent defensively even if it's extreme. We just have to be better," Rankin said. "It's been a tough stretch and we have a much needed break to reset."
