Ramsey Homers in Doubleheader Defeat at UCA

CONWAY, Ark. – In its final tune-up before conference play, the Alcorn State University softball program fell 8-0 and 10-2 to Central Arkansas on Tuesday at Farris Field.

The day was highlighted by a two-run bomb by junior Amari Ramsey. She went 2-for-3 in game two with her 11th career homer, the fourth-most in program history. Ramsey is up to 97 career hits and is three away from becoming the 15th student-athlete in school history to reach 100.

In game one, senior Ambria Dorsey kept the Lady Braves (5-23) in it until UCA (18-9, 3-0 SLC) broke it open late. Dorsey threw 5.0 frames.

Kayla Beaver threw a six-inning perfect game for the Sugar Bears and struck out six.

In game two, Alcorn mustered three hits. In addition to Ramsey's pair, senior Keelee Huff registered a single. Ramsey's homer came after senior Brittney Triplett led-off the inning with a walk.

Sophomore Brenn Ursin struck out three batters in 3.0 innings. Freshman Kiri Park and senior Alexsis Ramirez made appearances out of the bullpen.

"Today was tough. Early-on in the first game we had to overcome a pretty bad scene. That's a tough one for players to have to re-focus after hearing your sister in pain. Heck it was hard for me. The game just becomes secondary and your concern is for your team and making sure they are ok mentally and emotionally," said Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin. "Our hope and concern is that Daijah [Richardson] will be ok. There were some points to talk about in the games, but I just want our thoughts and prayers to be with her and hope her knee will be ok."

Alcorn will open SWAC action this weekend when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
