Braves Lose Hard-Fought Matches to UTRGV

LORMAN, Miss. – In an afternoon filled with long points, UT Rio Grande Valley grabbed a doubleheader over the Alcorn State University men's tennis program 5-2 and 5-0 on Monday at the Alcorn Tennis Courts.
 
Senior Gjorgji Popovski won both a singles and doubles match. He got the day started by teaming with junior Stojan Stojanovski at No. 1 doubles and registered a 6-2 victory over Alberto Mello and Carlo Izurieta.
 
Popovski followed it up with a three-set win at No. 1 singles. He ousted Izurieta 7-5, 2-6, 10-5. Popovski improved his singles record to 6-5 on the year at the top position.
 
A decisive win came at No. 3 singles where freshman Lucas Dini posted a straight set victory. He took down To Kani Williams 6-3, 6-1.
 
In the second match, Stojanovski was battling at No. 1 singles when the match went unfinished. The score was tied 6-1, 2-6, 3-3.
 
Sophomore Santiago Rocca nearly pulled out a win at No. 3 singles but was edged in a third-set tiebreaker. Rocca won the first set 6-4 before George Hutchings came back to win the second 6-1 and an extremely close tiebreaker 11-9.
 
Both the men's and women's tennis teams will be in action Thursday when they head to Clinton, Mississippi to take on Mississippi College at 2 p.m.
