CONWAY, Ark. – After a nine-day layoff from competition, the Alcorn State University softball program will take the field against Central Arkansas at Farris Field.
Â
Alcorn (5-19, 0-0 SWAC) and UCA (16-9, 3-0 SLC) will play a single game Monday at 7 p.m., followed by another Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Â
"We are hoping to get some consistency before heading into conference later this week. UCA presents a great challenge for us. We have to do a great job of just making routine plays and executing offensively to create opportunities," said Alcorn head coach
Josef Rankin. "Our players were given a few days to reset after a taxing first month of the season. We are looking forward to attacking the next part of our season."
Â
The last time the Lady Braves were in action was when they played five games at the Alex Wilcox Memorial, hosted by Mississippi State. Senior
Alexsis Ramirez hit for a .455 average and .500 on-base percentage over five games, going 5-for-11 with a walk. Ramirez is on a seven-game hitting-streak.
Â
Senior
Simone McKinney leads the team with a .342 average and a team-high eight multi-hit games. McKinney is one of three Lady Braves hitting over .300 along with juniors
Ashley Arnold (.333) and
Desirea Lindsey (.311).
Â
Alcorn's biggest inning this season has been the second where it has outscored the opposition 24-20.
Â
In the Alcorn career record book, junior
Amari Ramsey ranks fourth all-time in both doubles (28) and home runs (10). She's five hits away from becoming the 15th student-athlete in school history to reach 100. Ramsey is a two-time SWAC Hitter of the Week winner in her career and won once this season on Feb. 19.
Â
In the circle, senior
Ambria Dorsey ranks fourth all-time in school history in strikeouts (174), fifth in games started (48), seventh in innings (290.2) and 10th in wins (11).
Â
Rankin, who is in his sixth season, has mixed and matched his lineups as he's been known to do. The Lady Braves have used 24 different batting orders in 24 games.
Â
The Sugar Bears opened Southland Conference play this past weekend and swept Incarnate Word in a three-game series. It will be UCA's third game against a SWAC opponent after beating Jackson State 9-0 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 21-2.
Â
The Lady Braves and the Sugars Bears have met seven times before, most recently in 2018. Alcorn's only win in the series came in a doubleheader split in 2010.
