Men’s Tennis, Women’s Volleyball Post Highest Team GPA’s in the Spring

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University department of athletics recognized the men's tennis and women's volleyball programs for having the highest grade point averages (GPAs) on campus in the 2020 spring semester.

The men's tennis team combined for a 3.83 GPA, while women's volleyball averaged a 3.58 GPA.

"I am pleased that the aforementioned teams have demonstrated commitment to excellence in both their academic pursuits and in their chosen sport. Our stated goal for the academic year was a minimum overall department GPA of 3.30.  We set the bar high to prepare a strong foundation for our student-athletes for the next 40 years of their lives. I applaud our academic advisors, coaches and their teams for meeting and exceeding our goal," said assistant vice president for athletic compliance and academic services Cyrus K. Russ.

Other teams on campus above a 3.5 GPA in the spring included women's tennis with a 3.55 and women's soccer with a 3.51.

"As an athletic department as a whole, our student-athletes rose to the occasion academically. The shift from classroom courses to online studies presented great challenges for everyone, but our student-athletes excelled when faced with adversity and they should be commended for their efforts," said director of athletics Derek Horne.

The announcement came after Alcorn distinguished 39 student-athletes with 4.0 GPA's in the spring and 42 student-athletes graduated at spring commencement.
