Alcorn Releases Statement Regarding Non-Conference Competition

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University department of athletics is continuously monitoring the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to announcements made by other conferences across the country.

On Thursday, July 9, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced it would suspend all sports for the fall semester. Alcorn was scheduled to host SIAC member Fort Valley State in football, but that game will no longer take place on Saturday, September 12.

Announcements by other conferences across all divisions are being made daily and some leagues, including the Big Ten and Pac-12 have already committed to playing conference-only contests. Alcorn has been in contact with both Auburn (SEC) and Virginia-Lynchburg (NCCAA), but final decisions have not been made about those games at this time.

The Braves are slated to open the season at Auburn on September 5 and later host Virginia-Lynchburg on October 31.

"The athletic directors and administrators in the SWAC are in constant dialogue with the conference office to formulate the best possible resolutions for every member institution. Although we still don't have all the answers at this time, we must act in the best of interest of our student-athletes and athletic personnel during a very challenging time like this," said director of athletics Derek Horne. "It pains me to say that our fall schedules may be altered or postponed, but we will be sure to share any new information as final decisions are being made."

Alcorn has not yet released schedules for soccer, volleyball or cross country.
