LORMAN, Miss. – With the addition of two new conference members in 2021-22, Alcorn State University will be moving to the SWAC West Division, the conference office announced.
The move was made after a vote from the SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors.
"As a graduate of Alcorn State University, I am extremely proud of the University's and the conference's rich traditions and pageantry. As the SWAC is about to celebrate its centennial anniversary, the expansion of the conference is reflective of each schools' extraordinary support of their student-athletes and their ongoing commitment to building athletic and academic excellence," said Alcorn President Dr. Felecia M. Nave.
With the spring 2021 semester still to be played, Alcorn has won six SWAC East Division titles in football, six in baseball, three in softball and two in volleyball. In football, Alcorn's six East Division titles are tied for the most with Alabama A&M. Football division play began in 1999.
"Our institution experienced great success in its time in the SWAC East Division, and we look to continue our winning tradition in the west," said
Derek Horne, director of athletics. "The move makes sense for us when looking at the conference geographically, and we look forward to the league expanding as we welcome the new members."
In 2021-22, the SWAC will consist of two divisions of six with the additions of Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M, both of which will compete in the SWAC East Division. Alcorn will join Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling State, Prairie View A&M, Southern and Texas Southern in the SWAC West Division.
