Lady Braves Complete Stunning Comeback to Defeat Choctaws

CLINTON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's tennis program rallied from down 3-0 by winning the final four singles pairings, three of which going the distance, to stun Mississippi College, 4-3.

The Lady Braves (1-5, 0-0 SWAC) had to earn their victory the hard way, getting swept in the doubles point but rebounding to claim the win in the deciding seventh singles finale.

Things started out ominously for the visitors from Lorman, dropping all three doubles matches by a combined score of 18-5 to lose the point.

Singles play looked to predict an easy Choctaws victory as the home squad took the #1 and #2 slots in straight-sets to put themselves on the doorstep of a win up three-to-nil.

The turnaround was put in motion when #4 Aizat Zholdakyeva won a three-set thriller over Fernanda Cota (63-77, 6-2, 6-2).

#6 Stefany Grlj kept the momentum rolling with a 6-3 and 6-0 victory against Julia McCarty while the tide really shifted in Alcorn's favor when #5 Kimberley Kaome knotted the score with a three-set triumph by topping (6-3, 1-6, 6-1).

#3 Mikaela Konstantinova delivered the coup de gráce with a thrilling performance (77-63, 63-77, 6-4) to cap the miraculous outcome versus Anna Didkovska.

Alcorn tennis will return to the court on the weekend of February 26-28 when it will participate in the first SWAC pod of the season in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as Southern University plays host.
