Softball Opens SWAC Play Versus UAPB In Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball program picks up where it left off pre-COVID as it will host the UAPB Lady Lions in its conference opener this weekend at Sports Force Parks in Vicksburg.

The Lady Braves (2-9, 0-0 SWAC) were set to battle Arkansas-Pine Bluff around this time last season when COVID-19 struck just prior to the contest and subsequently wiped out the rest of the campaign.

Preseason SWAC Player of the Year Amari Ramsey has lived up to the billing, topping the team with a .350 batting average (100 points higher than next best), seven hits, five runs scored, four doubles and 11 total bases.

Chloey Morgan and Marsha Hunt share the RBI lead at three apiece while Morgan has the club's only stolen base plus is tied with Ashley Arnold and Desirea Lindsey for the most walks with three.

Pine Bluff has struggled to find a rhythm offensively through ten games, scoring just 11 runs or 1.1 runs per ballgame.

Felicia Drake fronts UAPB in a multitude of categories including batting average (.263), hits (5) and runs scored (3) while being one of eight different Lady Lions with a double.

Alyssa Wesley has been one of the more consistent student-athletes to reach base for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, reaching ten times through a combination of four hits, four walks and two hit-by-pitches. She also is tied for the team's most steals with two.

A pair of unrelated Martinez's (Jade and Remington) are co-leaders for RBIs with each picking up two.

On the mound, reliever Paola Rodriguez has the lowest ERA of the group at an even 6.00 while starting pitcher Shakeidria Hubbard has tallied the most strikeouts with six.

Alcorn has done well historically against the ladies from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, winning 21 of 32 all-time matchups for a winning percentage of 65.6%.
