LORMAN, Miss. – Senior infielder Amari Ramsey has done something that only a select few that have stepped foot on "The Reservation" can say, she's tallied over 100 hits (and counting) for the Alcorn State University softball program.
Ramsey, who was voted the 2021 Preseason SWAC Player of the Year, collected that elusive milestone during last weekend's River City Classic and is currently tied for 14th on the list with Tonya Nelms, who had 103 base knocks from 2004 to 2007.
A graduate of Harrison Central High School in Gulfport, Mississippi, she has been a superstar from day one when she arrived on the scene.
Her freshman season proved that she was a special athlete, leading the Lady Braves in slugging percentage (.592), doubles (12) and home runs (6) while starting all 49 ballgames.
As a sophomore, Ramsey was an All-SWAC First Team selection after topping Alcorn with an average of .367 and slugging percentage of .667 during conference play while also fronting the Purple and Gold in both runs scored (16) and RBIs (16).
Year three under Coach Rankin promised to be here best season yet, leading the SWAC with eight doubles, placing fourth in RBIs (15) and sixth for hits (19) while vaulting to fourth among the program's career leaders for doubles (28) and round-trippers (11). Unfortunately, the season was cut short one day before the conference slate was set to begin due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forever adding a "what-if" scenario to the 2020 campaign.
Ramsey and the Softball Braves return to the diamond Friday morning, traveling to Mississippi State for five games in three days including at least one matchup with the host Bulldogs who were ranked #22 in the NCAA during the preseason top-25 poll.
