LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball program will attempt to stay undefeated in conference action when it travels to Houston to play Texas Southern this weekend.
The Lady Braves (3-9, 1-0 SWAC) have been the best team in the league at turning double plays this year, averaging one double play every three ballgames while registering the third-lowest ERA among its peers at 5.43.
Brenn Ursin has done well to limit the number of free bases she's given out, limiting her walks per nine inning ratio to 1.33 to slot as the second-best mark in the conference. Ursin is tied with
Ambria Dorsey for the team lead in strikeouts with 11 while Dorsey has notched all three victories by the pitching staff.
When
Amari Ramsey gets on base, odds are it has been a double. The senior has 11 hits in 34 at-bats (.324) with eight of those being two-baggers (72.7%).
Ramsey fifth in the country for doubles per contest at 0.67 and leads Alcorn in batting average, hits, total bases (19), runs scored (9), on-base percentage (.410) and walks (4).
Marsha Hunt averages more than an RBI per hit, fronting the Purple and Gold by a wide margin with nine runs batted in on eight hits plus a sacrifice fly.
Scouting the Texas Southern Lady Tigers (4-12, 2-1 SWAC)
Texas Southern has claimed two non-conference wins against Abilene Christian (6-5) and UTSA (1-0) while coming back from a series opening loss to win the final two at Alabama State.
The Maroon and Silver pride itself on pitching and defense, recording the lowest ERA in the SWAC (4.80) and placing second for fielding percentage (.963).
If speedster Crimson Davis get on-base, Lady Braves batterymates should be on high alert as she averages 0.47 stolen bases a night, second-highest in the conference. She is the only Lady Tiger hitting above .275 on the season (13-for-35, .371).
Naomi Reyes has been a workhorse at the front of the rotation, tossing 46.1 innings over eight starts, striking out 40 and leading all TSU pitchers with multiple appearances in ERA (5.05).
Texas Southern has won two-thirds of all contests between the two universities, going 18-9 in 27 matchups.
