Franklin Sets New School Record In 5000m During Prairie View Relays

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas. – The Alcorn State University track & field program witnessed history in the Lonestar State as freshman Christian Franklin set a new program benchmark for the fastest recorded time in the outdoor 5000m dash.

Franklin was among three Braves runners to win its events this weekend, posting a time of 15:36.51 to beat out teammate Elijah Anderson, who finished second, by over two minutes at 17:40.74.

The University of Nevada at Reno transfer surpassed Darien Harrington's previous best pace of 16:29.17 that he ran during the 2015 campaign.

Ashton DeFreeze took home the gold during the 200m, sprinting his way past the competition in a speed of 21.87 seconds. He also came in fourth during the 400m (51.44).

Charles Nnathah was the final athlete on the men's side to claim an event championship, leaping and running his way to a 56.51 during the 400m hurdles.

The 4x100m relay team of Arrington Robinson, Bralon Robinson, Jakobe Rogers and Marcus Sims snatched second place in their event, going at a clip of 41.95.

Elsewhere on the men's side, Terrell White, Jae Sutherland and Braheem Bishop all slotted in at third for their respective events. White ran the 400m (51.18), Sutherland competed in the 400m hurdles (58.74) and Bishop was the only top-three finisher in a field event with a 1.77m high jump.

On the Lady Braves end of the spectrum, six different ladies wearing Purple and Gold tied for the best showing with a second place ranking.

Shameka Grover contributed an 11.93 in the 100m, An'Twanique Kinsler ran a 58.24 in the 400m and Akili Pleas-Carnie posted a time of 1:04.00 during the 400 hurdles to place second in shorter distance events.

Runelda Jackson continued to thrive in more stamina based running competitions, garnering second with a speed of 19:18.23 while taking part in the 5000m.

In the field events, Americus Knight and Qua'Neshia Hamilton stole the spotlight with runner-up performances as Knight got airborne with a 1.52m in the high jump while Hamilton leaped 11.87m during the triple jump.

The Braves and Lady Braves will make its next appearance on Friday and Saturday in Hattiesburg for the Southern Miss Invitational.
