Softball Braves Fall To Ball State

STARKVILLE, Miss. –  The Alcorn State University softball program ended its weekend at Mississippi State with a 8-3 defeat to the Ball State Cardinals on Sunday morning.

The Lady Braves (2-9, 0-0 SWAC) benefitted from five Cardinals errors but were only able to convert those into three unearned runs.

The Purple and Gold got two hits on the day courtesy of Mo Dickerson and Ashley Arnold.

Dickerson scored two of the three runs on the basepaths and Arnold was the other run to come across while the lone RBI of the afternoon came off her bat as well.

Other Lady Braves to reach base were Marsha Hunt (walk), Desirea Lindsey (walk) and Genise Wells in a pinch-hit opportunity (hit by pitch).

Alcorn drew first blood in the top of the second as Arnold knocked in Mo Dickerson and Arnold scored on an error by the BSU leftfielder, leading to a 2-0 early Lady Brave advantage.

Ball State would get on the scoreboard three times in the bottom of the third and would rattle off six unanswered runs to stake a 6-2 upper-hand.

Lindsey would bring Arnold around to score on a fielder's choice in the sixth but that was the final tally of the day for Alcorn as the Cards tacked on two more in the bottom half to conclude the final score at 8-3 BSU.

The two softball programs have now met twice, both coming this weekend, with Ball State claiming both contests.

The Lady Braves have 12 days off to prepare for its first SWAC contest since May 2019 when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on "The Reservation" March 19 at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader the following day. UAPB was the scheduled conference opener last season before COVID-19 struck and the game was called off a few days prior.
