CLINTON, Miss. - The Alcorn State Track and Field team found early success at the Mississippi College Opener on Saturday. Head Coach Jimmy Joseph was pleased with the team's effort in the opening contest.
"We had a productive day across the board. Our kids got some work in despite the weather and did well," said Joseph.
Sophomore Kiana Allen snatched gold in the women's long jump with a jump of 5.58m. Allen also leaped 11.24m to finish fifth in the women's triple jump. Senior Shameka Grover dashed to the top spot in the women's 100-meter dash in 12.49. Grover nearly nabbed the win in the women's 200-meter running 25.89 to finish second.
Fresh off earning Third Team All-SWAC Honors in the triple jump, Sophomore Qua'Neshia Hamilton earned runner-up honors Saturday afternoon in a jump of 11.72m. Freshman Akili Pleas-Carnie ran 1:05.68 in the 400-meter hurdles snatching the final silver medal for the Braves. Junior An'Twanique Kinsler finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.23.
On the men's side Freshman Christian Franklin continues his impressive campaign finishing 6th in the 1500m run in a new school record of 4:04.19. Franklin came back in the 800m run with a 1:58.57 to snatch runner-up honors in the meet. In his second meet of 2021, Freshman Jachius Spears ran 15.97 to cross the line fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Freshman Arrington Robinson and Sophomore Charles Nnathah Jr. finished 7th in the 100m Dash and 400m Hurdles respectively. The men also produced strong performances in the relays. The 4 x 100m Relay consisting of Arrington Robinson, Jakobe Rogers, Marcus Sims, and Anthony Morgan got the baton around the oval in 42.43 to finish seventh. Robinson and Morgan joined Sophomores Terrell White and Charles Nnathah Jr. to form the 4 x 400m Relay which finished fourth overall running 3:21.49.
The Alcorn Track and Field Team will take the weekend off and return to action on Friday, March 19th at the SELU Triangular Meet.
"Now it's back to work to fix the little things that make you successful later in the season," stated Coach Joseph.
