Softball Heads To Jackson State Following 18-Day Layoff

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball program return to the diamond for the first time since April 3 when it makes the short trip to Jackson State on Thursday and Friday.

The Lady Braves (4-14, 2-5 SWAC) have been one of the SWAC's finest up the middle as they are fourth for double plays per game (0.28).

Amari Ramsey can currently claim that she has the best doubles per game average in the country, topping all NCAA Division I student-athletes at 0.50 a contest. The program's all-time career doubles leader leads the club in batting average (.288), slugging percentage (.462), total bases (24), hits (15), runs scored (10) and doubles (9) while ranking second for both RBIs (5) plus on-base percentage (.351).

Marsha Hunt connected on the Purple and Gold's lone round-tripper so far this season to go along with being the runaway squad leader in RBI with 12.

Chloey Morgan and Hannah Dukes share the club's most walks at five each while Dukes ranks the best in on-base percentage at a .406 clip.

Kiri Parker fronts the pitching staff with an ERA of 6.52 over six appearances and four starts while allowing a rotation low .292 batting average allowed.

Ambria Dorsey is the top strikeout artist on the club with 16 whiffs while Brenn Ursin has pitched the most innings at 39.1.

Scouting the Jackson State Lady Tigers (13-19, 10-4 SWAC)

Jackson State is in first place of the SWAC's Eastern Division, having won four straight in conference play coming into the series.

The Blue Bengals are top-three in the league for a variety of categories including doubles per game (1.17), ERA (5.43), on-base percentage (.335), runs per game (3.63) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.50).

Samiyyah Huckabee has been an elite base stealing threat so far in 2021, ranking top-50 in the nation with an average of 0.55 swipes per game and leads the Southwestern Athletic Conference at 16 stolen bases overall.

Kayla Owens has been exquisite at not allowing walks, surrendering just 1.49 free passes per seven innings pitched to slot in second conference-wide.

106 meetings into the all-time series, the Blue and White are up 12 games over the Lady Braves (59-47).
