Ursin Shuts Down Grambling, Lady Braves Advance

GULFPORT, Miss. –  The Alcorn State University softball program used a masterful pitching performance from Brenn Ursin and a three-RBI triple off the bat of Chloey Morgan to blow past Grambling State, 8-2.

The Lady Braves (11-17, 8-7 SWAC) received runs in spurts, driving in three in the third and four during the sixth to go along with a single score in the fifth. Alcorn rattled off eight unanswered to begin the game before allowing two in the bottom of the sixth to spoil both the shutout and the mercy rule.

Ursin put forth a spectacular effort with Alcorn's season hanging in the balance, throwing a complete game six-hitter without a single earned run allowed (two unearned) and four strikeouts with just one walk.

Chloey Morgan drove the stake through the heart of the Lady Tigers' season, cranking a three-run triple to the wall in left-center to put the Purple and Gold ahead by seven in the sixth. She contributed her sixth multi-hit game of the season, drove in a season-best three RBIs, scored twice for the second time in 2021 and legged out her first career triple.

The 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup provided an RBI apiece as Ramsey drove one in with a fielder's choice, Marsha Hunt smashed a single right back up the box and Kiri Parker lofted a sacrifice fly.

Head Coach Josef Rankin's ace of the pitching staff made a rare start at designated player and rewarded his faith with her first multi-hit outing since 2018, going 2-for-4 plus scoring once.

Ashley Arnold had another productive day at the plate as she tries to catch Ramsey for the team's batting average and hits lead, going 2-of-3 in the contest and scoring both times she reached safely.

Grambling State (13-18, 10-8 SWAC) looked lethargic on offense, not posing much of a threat to the Lady Braves outside of two late runs.

Anaiy Fultz and Ty Robinson made up four of the Lady Tigers' six hits as the former drove in the team's lone RBI.

The Purple and Gold have now won seven straight ballgames over Grambling going back to 2017, owning a 31-16 lead in the series.

Coach Rankin's group lives to fight another day, awaiting the loser of Texas Southern and Alabama State at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
