GULFPORT, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball program staved off a late Southern rally (7-6) to reach the SWAC Championship Game but fell to Alabama State, 8-1.
The Lady Braves (14-18, 8-7 SWAC) lost the opening matchup of the tournament to Texas Southern before catching fire and winning four-in-a-row including knocking off both #1 seeds until succumbing to Alabama State.
Desirea Lindsey only had one hit in the two games but it was a milestone moment for her and it took special meaning being in front of family and friends in her hometown of Gulfport. With a double in the final frame of her last collegiate game, she joined teammate Amari Ramsey in the 100-hit club as the 16th member in program history while ending the campaign with exactly 100 base knocks.
Chloey Morgan came up clutch again and again all day long, doing a little bit of everything. Morgan went 3-for-7 (.429) with one single, one double and one triple, stole home, scored twice, drew a walk plus made a spectacular diving grab in shallow centerfield.
Hannah Dukes was 3-of-6 with a double and a walk to front the team in batting average and tying for the hit lead with Morgan.
Amari Ramsey ended her SWAC Player of the Year season with a 2-for-5 showing including two walks, a double and a run scored.
Brenn Ursin had a career-high six strikeouts over just five innings of work, picking up a no-decision but doing enough to send Alcorn past Southern.
Alabama State (19-27, 10-8 SWAC) won its second straight SWAC Championship and third in program history. They will move onto the NCAA Regionals as the SWAC's representative.
