VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball team faced the University of North Alabama in a contest at the Alcorn Softball Context on the final day of the River City Classic II. The Braves fell 6-3 to the Lions Saturday afternoon for the team's fourth loss.
Starting pitcher Breen Ursin struggled against the UNA offense from the beginning in her first loss in the circle. In 1.1 innings of play, the Atlanta, Ga. native allowed five hits for three earned runs.
Starting the game, North Alabama scored two runs in the first frame on a double to the leftfield. The Lions added a third run on a homer to take a 3-0 lead over Alcorn.
The Braves added two runs in the bottom of the third to prevent the shutout. Two Alcorn batters made it to base on singles and a double from Marsha Hunt, cutting the Lions lead to 3-2.
In three in the four remaining innings, North Alabama scored a run to have a 6-2 advantage over the Braves entering the last frame of the game.
Not yet done, Chloey Morgan reached base on the second on a double to left field. The Batesville, Miss. native then came home on a double off the bat of Kristan Edwards for a final score of 6-3.
As a squad, the Braves (7-4) scored three runs on eight hits. Morgan, Hunt, and Amari Ramsey tallied two hits each, and Hunt led the team with two RBIs.
Alcorn softball will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 25, traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Southern Miss softball tournament. The Braves' first opponent is the Aces for Evansville. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
