Softball Blanks in Day Two of Hub City Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball team comes up empty at the Hub City Classic, dropping its final two tournament games on Saturday.

Desirea Lindsey had three hits on the day, but it was not enough for a Braves victory. Alcorn dropped game one 11-0 to Evansville and fell 5-2 to Southern Miss.

In the first contest, Ta'Niyah Fletcher (1-2) was credited with the loss in the circle. The Atlanta, Ga. native was unable to make it out of the first inning, with one hit against, four earned runs and two walks. A'Mya Stevens and Ashanti Carter made pitching appearances in the effort. Stevens pitched 4.0 innings for seven hits against, four earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts, and Carter closed with one inning threw for three hits against, three earned runs, and one walk.

The Braves (7-8) tallied two hits and two errors as a squad. Lindsey and Chloey Morgan landed a blow each in the outing.

Evansville (8-5) racked up 11 runs with 11 hits against Alcorn. Jenna Nink led the effort with a 3-for-3 appearance for three RBIs, while Marah Wood also recorded three ribbies. Izzy Vetter (6-1) entered the game in relief for her sixth win of the season. She pitched 4.2 innings for one hit against and 10 strikeouts.

Brenn Ursin took the loss in the circle in game two, pitching 5.1 innings for four this against, three earned runs, and two walks. Lexi Veamoi closed the game for three this against, two earned runs, and one walk.

The Braves recorded two runs and five hits against the Golden Eagles. Linsey had a 2-for-3 plate appearance, Sarah Kennedy and Tyesha Cole had one run each, and Hannah Dukes grabbed the team's only RBI.

Southern Miss connected for seven hits and five runs, while committing three errors. Alyssa Davis had a 2-for-2 outing with one run and one ribbie. Scout Jennings and Alexis Dittmer had two RBIs each.

Jana Lewis (3-2) pitched a complete game to win. She recorded five hits against and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.

ALCORN 0, EVANSVILLE 11

The Aces scored the first run of the competition on a passed ball and added three runs on a three-RBI homer to centerfield. Alcorn 0, UE 4

Three innings passed before Evansville added a fifth run in the bottom of the top of the fourth. A double to center field would then score three. Alcorn 0, UE 8

The Aces took a 9-0 lead in the fifth on a double to right-center, and a homer to right field would score the final two runs. Alcorn 0, UE 11

ALCORN 2, USM 5

Two and a half innings came and went before the Golden Eagles scored the contest's first run in the third bottom frame. Alyssa Davis singled to the shortstop to score Maria Smith. Alcorn 0, USM 1

Alcorn took the lead in the fourth as Tyesha Cole and Sarah Kennedy scored on an error by the USM second baseman. Alcorn 2, USM 1

The Braves held the lead for two innings, but four runs in the sixth handed victory to Southern Miss. Scout Jennings singled to right field to score Davis and Columbia Holeman, and a triple off the bat of Jana Lee brought in Jennings and Terrica Williams. Alcorn 2, USM 5

UP NEXT
The Braves will be back on the field on Friday, March 4, when they travel to Starkville, Miss. for the Mississippi State Softball Tournament. Alcorn State will take on Jacksonville State at 12:30 p.m. to open the event.
