Softball Fumbles the First Game of Series at Grambling

RUSTON, La. – The Lady Braves Softball team went 5-for-25 with five runners left on base Tuesday and struggled to get the offense going in a 5-1 loss at Grambling State.

Alcorn falls to 16-31 and 9-12 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with the loss. Grambling improves to 22-22 and 9-13 in the SWAC.

Grambling scored in the bottom of the first, third, and sixth inning, with the Lady Braves collecting their only run in the top of the fourth.

Ta'Mya Johnson led the Tigers' offense with a 2-for-3 appearance with two runs and one RBI. Shells Payon was credited with the win, pitching the complete game for five hits against, one earned run and two walks.

Chloey Morgan, Marsha Hunt, Tyesha Tcake Cole, Desirea Lindsey, and Amari Ramsey connected for one hit each, while Ramsey tallied the only RBI and Cole scored the only run. Lexi Veamoi was credited with the loss. She also pitched the complete game for seven hits against, five earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout.

Alcorn and Grambling return to action on Wednesday, April 4, at noon for a doubleheader at the GSU Softball Complex.

A two-out RBI ground out in the bottom of the first from Antiya Randle gave Grambling the 1-0 lead. GSU 1, ASU 0

Randle singled to left field for two RBIs in the bottom of the third, and Nya Jones singled for one to give the Tigers the 4-0 advantage. GSU 4, ASU 0.

The Lady Brave ended their scoring drought on an RBI single by Ramsey to cut the Tigers' lead to 4-1. GSU 4, ASU 1

Grambling scored the last run of the contest. Ta'mya Johnson singled to center field on two out for one RBI for a final score of 5-1. GSU 5, ASU 1
