HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball team moves to 3-6 on the season after dropping both contests on day two of the Golden Eagles Invitational. The Lady Braves fell 15-0 to Tulsa and 14-7 to Jacksonville State.
The Lady Braves were unsuccessful in their first outing of the day, falling 15-0 against the University of Tulsa Saturday morning. Kristen Edwards and A'Mya Stevens were the only players to get off hits against Tulsa's bullpen, while senior pitcher Kiri Parker took the loss in the circle.
Parker (1-2), a native of Vacherie, La., started the contest for Alcorn, throwing for 2.2 innings with five hits against, ten runs (two earned), and three walks. Ashanti Carter entered the game in the middle of the third to pitch for 1.1 innings with three hits against, five earned runs, and two walks. Stevens closed the contest with just one hit against.
For the Hurricanes, Imani Edwards had a stellar performance against the Lady Braves. The junior infielder had a 3-for-3 appearance, including one triple, with three runs and three RBIs.
Kylee Nash (1-2) received her first pitching win of the season. She pitched for 3.0 innings with one hit against, one walk, and one strikeout. Entering the game in relief, Riley Grant pitched for 2.0 innings with one hit against and four strikeouts.
Two impactful innings gave Jacksonville the edge in game two. The Lady Braves led 6-3 in the fourth inning, but five runs in the fifth and five in the seventh would hand the Gamecocks the 14-7 victory. Alcorn struggled in the field with seven errors to JSU's two. Only four of the Gamecocks' runs were earned.
Edwards led the Alcorn with a 2-for-3 appearance with one run and two RBIs, and Kelsey Lockridge also had two RBIs for the Braves.
Alexa Veamoi (1-3) took the loss in the circle. The Athens, Ga. native started the contest to pitch 4.2 innings with six hits against, eight runs (two earned), and three walks. Ta'Niyah Fletcher was the Lady Braves' closer, pitching 2.1 innings for six runs (two earned), and seven walks.
Lindsey Richardson led the Gamecocks at the plate with three RBIs. Morgan Nowakowski had two hits and Emma Jones had four runs.
Kat Carter (3-0) recorded her third pitching win. She entered the contest in the third inning to pitch for five with six hits against, three earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Alcorn returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 19, for the final day of the Golden Eagles Invitational. The Lady Braves will face USM for the second time this weekend at noon.
