Alcorn Splits Doubleheader, Texas Southern Takes Series

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball team splits day two with Texas Southern, delivering a 2-0 shutout in game one but suffering an 11-3 loss in the closing contest of the three-game series. The Lady Tigers take the series 2-1, and the Lady Braves move to 7-18 overall and 4-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Game One
Alcorn State defeated Texas Southern 2-0 in game one as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. A'Mya Stevens closed the contest in the circle for her first save up the season, inducing a flyout for the final out of the game.

The pitching was vital for both sides as the Lady braves struck out two and Texas Southern sat down two.

A single by Jayda Carter in the second inning was a positive for the Lady Tigers, but they could not bring a runner home in the effort.

Kiri Parker started the game in the circle for Alcorn. The hurler surrendered zero runs on three hits over six innings, striking out two.

Lailah Bell threw the completed game for Texas Southern. The junior pitcher allowed five hits and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout.

Marsha Hunt led the Lady Braves at the plate. She went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Game Two
Nothing came easy for the Lady Braves in the day's second contest, as they fell 11-3.

Texas Southern got things started in the first inning. Haslam doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Haslam then scored on a ground out to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 advantage entering the second half of the inning.

The Lady Braves answered. Kennedy Terry scored Alcorn's first run on an error by the first baseman, and Kristian Edwards came in on a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2.

Alcorn added a third run in the second when Hunt singled to score Terry to give the Lady Braves a 3-2 lead.

Texas Southern took the lead for good with nine runs in the third inning. The nine runs came in on six hits and two Alcorn errors, leaving two stranded on base.

Melanie Guardiola occupied the circle for the contest to claim the pitching win for Texas Southern. The hurler allowed three hits and three runs over five innings, striking out two.

Ta'Niyah Fletcher led off in the circle for Alcorn. The pitcher lasted two innings, allowing five hits and eight runs. Parker threw three innings in relief.

Marsha Hunt once again led the Lady Braves at the plate with a 3-for-3 appearance for one RBI. Terry, Jamyiyah Cotton, and Mikeria Howard had one hit each.

Texas Southern tallied nine hits on the day. Deana Zuniga and Daryn Haslam had multiple hits, and Zuniga led TSU with three hits in three at-bats.
