GULFPORT, Miss. – The Lady Braves softball team slugged it out with Florida A&M Wednesday afternoon in its second game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball tournament. After losing 1-0 to Alabama State in the last play of the contest, Alcorn needed to defeat the Rattlers to stay alive in the tournament.
After falling behind 5-4 in the fourth inning, Lady Braves bats caught fire in the sixth. Alcorn was able to outlast FAMU 9-5 to keep its championship dreams alive.
Four Lady Braves connected for three hits each, with Kristian Edwards, Kelsey Lockridge, and Mikeria Howard seeing doubles. Howard led the offense with a 3-for-4 appearance for four RBIs.
Senior pitcher Alexa Veamoi was credited with the win in the circle. She threw the entire 7-inning contest for one strikeout, two walks, eight hits, and five runs (three earned).
The Lady Braves will return to the Gulfport Sportsplex tomorrow, Thursday, May 11, for its third game of the tournament. Alcorn will take on the loser of the Alabama State and Grambling game at noon.
