OXFORD, Miss. – Alcorn State University women's track & field competed in the Ole Miss Classic hosted by the University of Mississippi over the weekend. The Lady Braves ran against teams such as Pittsburg State University, Indiana State University and University of Memphis.
In the 100-meter run,
Taliya Spurlock,
Kadijah Ramsey, and
Kaylin White competed for Alcorn. Spurlock finished in 12.48 seconds while Ramsey finished in 12.74 second. White ended the race in 12.97 seconds. Diandrenique Gaines of Pittsburg State claimed first place in 11.51 seconds. Her teammate, Taniya Looney, earned second place in 11.66 seconds. Angel Thomas of Indiana State came in third place in 11.98 seconds.
Brianna Wilson ran for the Lady Braves in the 200-meter run and finished in 25.50 seconds. Gaines (Pittsburg State) came in first place in 23.69 seconds while teammate, Looney, claimed second place in 24.44 seconds. Kyndea Matlock of Memphis took third place in 24.50 seconds.
In the 400-meter run,
Jasmine Ward,
Jade Ceasar,
Tionna Harris, and
Shy'Kerria Curtis competed for ASU. Ward finished in 59.47 seconds while Harris crossed the finish line in 1:00.28. Ceasar ended the race in 1:01.68. Curtis finished the race in 1:07.80. Mikah Edwards (Pittsburg State) won first place in 55.46 seconds. Gabrielle Cross (Memphis) came in second place in 55.61 seconds. Sydney Burdine of Southeast Missouri State University snapped up third place in 56.40 seconds.
Samouya Nevers ran for Alcorn State in the 800-meter run and finished in 2:39.33. Sophia Harvey of Belmont University took first place in 2:15.76 while teammate Savanah Balcerak claimed second place in 2:16.16. Erika Mellor (Southeast Missouri) came in third place in 2:16.20.
In the 1,500-meter run, Shareen Cheruiyot and
Joyce Kiptum ran for Alcorn. Cheruiyot finished in 5:14.66 while Kiptum crossed the finish line in 5:47.36. The University of Mississippi swept the winners podiums as Sophie Baumann came in first place in 4:27.76, Beth Arentz finished in second place in 4:29.30 and Sarah Schiffman placed third in 4:32.88.
Teresa Gallegos ran for the Lady Braves in the 3,000-meter run and finished in 11:26.90. Deyanneira Color Maldonado of Aurora University claimed first place in 9:58.54. Chloe Figgins (Memphis) came in second place in 10:03.48. Cadi Rowe of Troy University placed third in 10:11.22.
Alcorn's 4x400-meter relay team (Harris, Ward, White, Wilson) crossed the finish line in 4:01.14. Pittsburg State claimed first place in 3:46.31 and Indiana State finished in second place in 3:49.52. Southeastern Missouri (A) came in third place in 3:51.34.
DeAsha Davis competed in the triple jump for the Lady Braves and finished with 11.74 meters (38' 6.25"). Kyla McLaurin (Mississippi) finished in first place with 12.21 meter (40' .75") while Hanna Onufriieva of Harding University came in second place with 11.90 meters (39' .5"). Dominique Wood (Indiana State) took third place with 11.90 meters (39' .5").
In the shot put, White,
Destinee Lanham,
Gabrielle Christopher threw for ASU. White finished with 9.52 meters (31' 3") and Lanham ended the event with 9.37 meters (30' 9"). Christopher finished with 9.27 meters (30' 5"). Jessica Ramsey of Team Adidas finished in first place with 18.09 meters (59' 4.25"). Mississippi teammates, Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell, finished in second and third place with 17.23 meters (56' 6.5") and 16.82 meters (55' 2.25"), respectively.
Alcorn will be back in action for the Pelican Relays hosted Southern University from April 5-6 in Baton Rouge, La.
