LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Week following his standout performance in the Braves' 33-14 victory over Texas Southern.
Tolbert, a sophomore signal-caller, was efficient and poised under center, completing 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. He also made an impact on the ground, rushing eight times for 35 yards to help extend drives and keep the Tiger defense off balance.
Behind Tolbert's leadership, the Braves offense controlled the tempo throughout the game and delivered one of its most complete performances of the season.
The recognition marks Tolbert's first SWAC weekly honor of the year.
Alcorn State (5-3, 4-1 SWAC) will return home to Jack Spinks–Marino Casem Stadium this Saturday, November 8, to host Southern in another key conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
