MOBILE, Ala. – Alcorn State men's basketball battled down to the wire Thursday night but fell just short on the road, 76-70, to South Alabama inside the Mitchell Center.
The Braves (0-2) led by six at halftime, 40-34, behind a hot-shooting opening frame that saw them knock down 53 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the arc. However, South Alabama (2-0) countered with a strong second half, outscoring Alcorn 42-30 to protect its home court.
Shane Lancaster paced the Braves with a game-high 25 points, going 8-for-17 from the floor and hitting seven three-pointers. Nick Woodard added 14 points and seven rebounds, including three triples and a pair of clutch free throws late. Tycen McDaniels continued his efficient start to the season, scoring 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting while grabbing three rebounds and dishing four assists.
Davian Williams finished with five points, three assists, and three steals, while Omari Hamilton contributed four points and four boards off the bench. Jameel Morris chipped in five points, three assists, and three steals in 15 minutes of play.
As a team, Alcorn shot 43.6 percent (24-for-55) overall, 36.1 percent from three (13-for-36), and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. The Braves forced 15 turnovers, scoring 17 points off takeaways.
South Alabama was led by Peyton Law's dominant 29-point, nine-rebound effort on 13-of-15 shooting, while Jayden Cooper followed with 22 points.
Alcorn returns to action on Saturday, November 8, when it travels north to face Minnesota. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Williams Arena.
