JACKSON, MS – The Alcorn State softball team opened the 2025 season in dominant fashion, defeating Mississippi Valley State, 13-3, in six innings at the
River City Classic on Friday afternoon, in a non-conference contest.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Lady Braves (1-0) took control, holding Mississippi Valley (0-1) scoreless for the remainder of the game while using a high-powered offense to pull away late.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mississippi Valley took an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring three unearned runs off two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a defensive error.
- Alcorn responded in the second inning as Paris Thompson tripled and later scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 3-1.
- In the fourth, the Lady Braves surged ahead with a three-run inning. Thompson doubled in a pair of runs, and Sarah Kennedy drew a bases-loaded walk to give Alcorn a 4-3 lead.
- Alcorn tacked on another run in the fifth before exploding for eight runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from Kennedy and an RBI double from Olivia Miller.
- Miller (1-0) also starred in the circle, tossing four no-hit innings in relief while striking out two and earning the win.

- Thompson finished 2-for-2 with a triple, a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
- Miller had two hits, including a double, and added an RBI while also pitching four shutout innings.
- Kennedy contributed a two-run double and finished with three RBIs.
- Alcorn totaled 10 hits and forced three errors from Mississippi Valley's defense.
- The Lady Braves held the Devilettes to just two hits for the game.
