LORMAN, MS – Alcorn State softball opened its weekend series against Grambling State on Friday afternoon but fell 10-4 at the Alcorn Softball Complex. Despite a fast start and early lead, the Lady Braves (9-21, 4-12 SWAC) were unable to keep pace with the Lady Tigers (13-18, 6-6 SWAC), who used a four-run sixth inning to pull away.
Jamyiyah Cotten led Alcorn offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Yahnya Acevedo finished 1-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, and an RBI.
Mariah Morgan also contributed an RBI single.
Kennedy Terry,
Paris Thompson, and
Olivia Miller each recorded a hit to highlight the Lady Braves' eight-hit effort.
Ta'Niyah Fletcher took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits over 5.2 innings pitched.
Alainah Felton finished the game in relief, tossing 1.1 innings while holding Grambling State scoreless in the final frame.
Alcorn opened the game with energy, scoring in each of the first two innings to keep pace early, but a two-run home run and a series of defensive miscues allowed Grambling to take control in the middle innings.

First Inning – Alcorn 1, Grambling State 0
- Kennedy Terry doubled to left field to lead off the bottom of the first.
- After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Terry scored on an RBI groundout by Mariah Morgan.
- Alcorn jumped out to a 1-0 lead, aided by aggressive baserunning.
Second Inning – Alcorn 2, Grambling State 2
- Paris Thompson opened the second inning with a double and later scored on a single to right field by Jamyiyah Cotten.
- Grambling State responded with two runs in the top half of the inning off an RBI double by Ahsunte' Specks.
Third and Fourth Innings – Grambling State 4, Alcorn 2
- Grambling seized the lead in the third inning after a two-run home run by Cadashia Collins.
- Alcorn stranded runners in the third and fourth innings, unable to close the gap despite base hits from Bernard and Miller.
Fifth Inning – Grambling State 6, Alcorn 4
- Cotten singled and later scored on a double to left field by Acevedo, who also came home on a throwing error after stealing third base.
- However, Grambling responded with two unearned runs in the top half to maintain their advantage.
Sixth Inning – Grambling State 10, Alcorn 4
- Grambling extended their lead with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Collins and a two-run error by Alcorn's defense.
- Felton entered the game in relief and stopped the bleeding, recording the final outs of the inning.
Seventh Inning – Final Push
- Alcorn was unable to mount a rally in the final inning, going down in order to end the game.
- The Lady Braves finished with eight hits but left four runners stranded on the bases.
