Alcorn Falls in 63-59 Shootout at Grambling State

GRAMBLING, La. — Alcorn State University erased a pair of 14-point deficits, scored 38 second-half points and built a 17-point fourth-quarter advantage, but Grambling State University mounted a late rally to hand the Braves a heartbreaking 63-59 Southwestern Athletic Conference loss Saturday afternoon at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

The loss snapped Alcorn's two-game winning streak and dropped the Braves to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in SWAC play, while Grambling improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The two teams combined for 122 points and 1,165 yards of total offense in a game that lasted four hours and 17 minutes.

Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert turned in another prolific performance for the Braves, completing 18-of-31 passes for 411 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. It marked Tolbert's second 400-yard passing performance in the last four games after throwing for a career-high 488 yards and five touchdowns in Alcorn's double-overtime victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Tolbert's top two targets combined for 261 yards and four touchdowns. Damien Jones caught four passes for a game-high 140 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yard score, while Jamarr Ebron finished with three receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns, highlighted by a 76-yard scoring reception.

Fredrick Robertson continued his strong stretch, rushing 21 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Robertson also caught two passes for 42 yards, giving him 147 yards from scrimmage. Ernest Temple added 17 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Alcorn struck first after its defense forced an opening Grambling punt. The Braves took over at the GSU 43 and converted a fourth down before Robertson scored on a four-yard run, giving Alcorn a 7-0 lead with 7:16 remaining in the opening quarter.

Grambling answered quickly. Jacobe Robinson connected with Tyson George for a 54-yard touchdown to tie the game before D'Shaun Ford's two-yard touchdown run gave the Tigers a 14-7 advantage late in the first quarter.

The Tigers extended their lead to 21-7 early in the second when Robinson found George again, this time from eight yards out.

Alcorn needed only 28 seconds to respond. Tolbert connected with Ebron for a 76-yard touchdown, pulling the Braves within 21-14. Grambling answered with Ashton Frye's 12-yard touchdown run to regain a 14-point advantage, but Tolbert directed a 75-yard drive late in the half and found Malachi Augustus for a three-yard touchdown with 1:54 remaining. Alcorn entered halftime trailing 28-21.

Grambling opened the second half with another explosive play as Katrevrick Banks returned the kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Tigers' advantage to 35-21 just 13 seconds into the third quarter.

From there, Alcorn took control. Tolbert engineered a 10-play, 75-yard drive and found Jones for a 13-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 35-28.
