UIW Takes Two from Alcorn in Vicksburg

Braves battle hard in multiple three-set matches

VICKSBURG, Miss. – Incarnate Word took both matches of a Saturday non-conference doubleheader against Alcorn in men's tennis action at Hall's Ferry Tennis Court in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Cardinals collected 4-0 wins in both matches, respectively.
 
UIW 4, Alcorn 0 [Match One]
Alcorn's Vicent Llobell Buigues took the opening set of his singles match Saturday morning as the Braves fell to visiting Incarnate Word 4-0 in the first of two matches played between the two squads on the day in non-conference action at Hall's Ferry Tennis Court in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
 
Alcorn (3-4) opened the doubles play with a win at the No. 2 position, using the tandem of Matthew Holl and Vicent Llobell Buigues for a 6-2 victory over the UIW team of Santiago Flyckt and Marcel Miralles.
 
However, Incarnate Word (1-2) rebounded to collect each of the No. 1 and No. 3 positions in order to claim the doubles point and move ahead 1-0 heading into singles play.
 
UIW's Augustin Salazar picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win to begin singles at the No. 5 spot against the Braves' Fabian Juarez. The Cardinals made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the top spot with Alejandro Hernandez turning back Alcorn freshman Sebastian Griffiths.
 
The Cardinals claimed the final match on court two with a 6-1, 6-2 win from UIW's Emilio Vila defeating Alcorn rookie Matthew Holl.
 
Buigues won his opening set at No. 3 singles 6-2, but his match was abandoned with the freshman from Spain trailing in the second set, 4-3.

UIW 4, Alcorn 0 [Match Two]
Alcorn Men's Tennis stood strong in singles action Saturday afternoon with the play of Vicent Llobell Buigues and Tomas Grime as the Braves dropped the second match of a doubleheader at home to visiting Incarnate Word by a 4-0 count at Hall's Ferry Tennis Court in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
 
The doubles point went to Incarnate Word as the Cardinals took the No. 2 and No. 3 positions with mirror 6-3 score lines.
 
In singles play, Alcorn interim head coach Kersten Vanem-Walker saw her No. 1 player forced to retire early-on, as Sebastian Griffiths had to cut his match against Incarnate Word's Emilio Vila after dropping the opening game. That allowed the Cardinals the 2-0 advantage in the match.
 
UIW (2-2) grabbed a 3-0 lead when Marcel Miralles turned back Alcorn's Matthew Holl in the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win.
 
Alcorn (3-5) battled hard at No. 3 singles using Vicent Llobell Buigues against UIW's Santiago Flyckt. In one of two exciting matches, Buigues dropped the opener 6-0, but quickly responded with a 6-4 win in set two. The third set saw the Alcorn Spaniard on top 2-1 in the third-set tie-break before it was abandoned with the match victory sealed for the visitors from San Antonio, Texas.
 
Another exciting match occurred at No. 4 singles with Alcorn sophomore Tomas Grime losing an opening set tie-break, only to bounce back for a 6-1 win in the second set. Grime led 4-1 in the third before it was unfinished.
 
UIW sealed the match at No. 6 with Ian Uraga taking a three-set win from the Braves Fabian Juarez on scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, respectfully.
 
In all, the Braves forced three (3) three-set matches in the nightcap of singles play.
 
Alcorn is back in action quickly as the Braves travel to Memphis on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 3:30 p.m.
