VICKSBURG, Miss. – Alcorn Men's Tennis was unable to claim a home win Thursday afternoon as the visiting New Orleans Privateers collected a 5-0 victory from the Braves in nonconference action at Hall's Ferry Tennis Court in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
New Orleans (6-0) stayed unbeaten in the spring as the Privateers began the day by taking the doubles point with wins in two-of-three positions, respectively.
The Privateers grabbed a 6-0 win at the No. 1 position with Jacob Rouleau-Mailly and Jerall Yasin against the Alcorn tandem of
Sebastian Griffiths and
Tomas Grime, respectfully. The ultimate doubles match was collected by the Privateers' Peter Kieslinger and Marius Gyllerup with a 6-1 victory over Alcorn's team of
Fabian Juarez and
Jorge Prats Navarrete on court three.
Alcorn (3-7) saw freshman Navarrete earn a 6-1 win in the first set of his match at No. 5 singles, only to be drawn 3-3 in the second set before the match was abandoned due to the overall match being decided at other positions.
The Braves' Griffiths, a freshman from Neath, Wales, watched his match go unfinished after dropping his opening set 6-2, and fighting back for a 5-5 deadlock in the second when the match was abandoned.
UNO went up 2-0 in the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles as Gyllerup defeated
Jeremiah Jones in straight sets. The No. 2 position was captured by UNO's Beltran Fernandez courtesy a 6-4, 6-0 win from Alcorn's
Matthew Holl. And it would be Carlos Melgosa laying claim to a 6-4, 6-0 defeat of
Vicent Llobell Buigues on court three.
A 5-0 decision was put in place with a win at No. 4 singles from Gonzalo Cotter of the Privateers, as he was able to step past
Tomas Grime of Alcorn on the strength of a 6-2, 7-5 hard-fought match between the two players.
The Braves open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Sunday, Feb. 22, as Alcorn travels to Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama, for a match beginning at 11 a.m.
