Braves conclude play at SWAC Pod #1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Florida A&M held off Alcorn by a 4-0 decision in women's tennis action Saturday afternoon with the match part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Pod #1 event hosted by Alabama State at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center on the campus of Alabama State.

With the loss, Alcorn dropped to 4-13 overall and 1-2 in the SWAC, after the Braves picked up their first SWAC win of the campaign a day prior against Bethune-Cookman.

Florida A&M (3-6, 2-0 SWAC) wasted little time asserting control, winning the doubles point on the strength of victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.

The tandem of Larissa Silva and Genesis Whitelock opened the scoring with a 6-4 win over Alcorn's Hana Bajramovic and Amelia Tatafu, followed quickly by Luiza Eidelvein and Veronica Rodriguez, who dispatched Katherine Grados and Natalija Nikolic 6-3.

The third doubles match, featuring Sydney Brantley and Alyynah Thomas against Zoe Crimmel and Oihane Villanueva Lopez, was left unfinished at 4-5 – with the Braves duo leading, after the doubles point had already been decided.

Florida A&M then secured the team win in singles competition, clinching the match with three completed victories.

Genesis Whitelock led the way at the No. 2 position, defeating Alcorn's Amelia Tatafu in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Luiza Eidelvein followed with the most dominant performance of the day, rolling past Natalija Nikolic 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.

Alyynah Thomas wrapped up the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Katherine Grados at No. 6.

Three additional singles matches remained unfinished once the result was decided.

At No. 1, Veronica Rodriguez held a 6-4, 5-3 lead over Bajramovic. Sydney Brantley was in command at No. 3, leading Zoe Crimmel 3-6, 6-1, 3-1 after dropping the opening set. At No. 4, Larissa Silva was up 7-5, 4-2 against Oihane Villanueva Lopez.

The Braves will have some time off for spring break before returning to action Sunday, March 15, as Alcorn plays host to Troy at Halls Ferry Tennis Courts in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The first serve is set for 10 a.m.
