Alcorn Women Split Saturday Doubleheader

Braves fall at Jackson State, defeat MVSU at home

Alcorn Women's Tennis played a doubleheader on Saturday, as the Braves traveled to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in-state opponent Jackson State for the opener in the state capital, before turning around and hosting fellow "Magnolia State" counterpart Mississippi Valley State in a nonconference match in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
 
Alcorn fell 4-0 to Jackson State, and then grabbed a 5-0 win in the nightcap from MVSU.
 
MATCH ONE: JACKSON STATE 4, ALCORN 0
JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State swept Alcorn in women's tennis Saturday afternoon, winning 4-0 at the JSU Tennis Center to capture the 2026 SWAC Regular Season title at home in Jackson, Mississippi.
 
The hosts clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
 
Helen Hernandez and Victoria Linkovski handled Hana Bajramovic and Amelia Tatafu 6-1 at the top spot, while Isabella Benavides and Paula Corbalan edged Katherine Grados and Natalija Nikolic 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2.
 
However, Alcorn (6-16, 3-5 SWAC) fielded the duo of Zoe Crimmel and Oihane Villanueva Lopez to keep the Braves from being shut out in doubles, defeating Tiara Alvarez and Daniela Tovar 7-6 (7-5) on court three.
 
JSU (12-10, 8-0 SWAC) sealed the match in the singles matches.
 
Benavides posted the most dominant result of the day, blanking Crimmel 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Hernandez followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Natalija Nikolic at No. 4, and Corbalan closed out the team win with a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Tatafu in top flight action.
 
Three singles matches at Nos. 2, 5 and 6, respectively, were left unfinished once the outcome was decided.
 
With the victory, Jackson State improved to 12-10 overall and 8-0 in the SWAC. Alcorn fell to 6-16 on the season and 3-5 in conference play.

MATCH TWO: ALCORN 5, MVSU 0
VICKSBURG, Miss. – Alcorn dominated Mississippi Valley State from start to finish Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 5-0 victory in nonconference women's tennis at Halls Ferry Tennis Courts. In Vicksburg, Mississippi.
 
Alcorn (7-17) wasted no time securing the doubles point.
 
The Braves tandem of freshmen Hana Bajramovic and Amelia Tatafu claimed the No. 3 doubles position by default, and Natalija Nikolic and Katherine Grados followed with a 6-0 shutout of Ruramai Nyamakura and Alice Legnedahl at No. 1 spot, respectfully.
 
The No. 2 doubles match between Zoe Crimmel and Oihane Villanueva Lopez against Nina Schiks and Lilly Gansauge was left unfinished after Alcorn had already secured the point.
 
Alcorn was equally dominant in singles play.
 
Nikolic blanked Legnedahl 6-0, 6-0 in the second spot, Lopez dispatched Schiks 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, and Matea Andelic defeated Princess Bass 6-0, 6-0 over on court five.
 
Bajramovic earned a victory by default at No. 6 after MVSU (0-12) was unable to field a player.
 
Crimmel held a 6-1 lead in the day's top-flight match, and Grados was ahead 6-1, 5-0 at No. 4 when those matches were called off with the outcome already decided.
 
With the regular season concluded, Alcorn has earned the No. 6 seed for next weekend's SWAC Women's Tennis Tournamrnt taking place at City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Braves take on No. 3 seed Alabama State in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 17, at 1 p.m.
