NEW ORLEANS, La. – Third-seeded Jackson State swept fifth-seeded Alcorn 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament on Friday at City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Jackson State clinched the victory by sweeping the doubles point before closing out singles play to advance.
The Tigers won the first two doubles matches to secure the doubles point, with the pairing of Ching Chang Chiu and Chen Hung-Yu defeating Alcorn's combination of
Matthew Holl and
Vicent Llobell Buigues 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Fabrizio Fallas and Gokalp Ayar topped
Fabian Juarez and
Sebastian Griffiths 6-4 at the No. 2 doubles position.
In singles play, Gokalp Ayar delivered the most dominant performance of the match, routing
Jorge Prats Navarrete 6-0, 6-1 on court four.
Chen Hung-Yu followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over
Fabian Juarez at No. 6, and Jhoan Vaquero secured a 6-4, 6-2 win over
Matthew Holl in the second spot to complete the team's fourth point and clinch the match.
With the victory, Jackson State improved to 8-12 on the season and advances to the SWAC Tournament semifinals. Alcorn's season ends at 5-19, respectfully.
