HAMMOND, La. – Shelby Morris was 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs on Tuesday evening as Southeastern Louisiana defeated Alcorn 13-0 in nonconference softball action at North Oak Park in Hammond, Louisiana
Â
Shelby Morris, the Lions' leadoff hitter and second baseman, homered and doubled while being the offensive catalyst throughout the contest. She capped a seven-run second inning with an inside-the-park three-run homer to left center, scoring Brilee Ford and Shenita Tucker in the process. She added a two-run double in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, respectfully.
Â
Ka'Lyn Watson clubbed a two-run home run to right field – her sixth of the season – in the second inning, and Cydnee Schneider went 1-for-2 with two triples and two RBI. Maria Detillier was equally impressive with a 3-for-3 performance in producing a double, a single and three RBIs.
Â
Meanwhile, shortstop Chloe Magee added a triple and an RBI of her own on the night.
Â
Southeastern Louisiana (42-11) sent 11 batters to the plate in the decisive second inning, collecting six hits and seven runs against starter
Chiara Olison, who was chased after retiring just one batter in the frame.
Â
Hallie Burns (18-4) earned the win in relief, throwing a scoreless first inning before giving way to a parade of six SLU pitchers who combined to hold Alcorn to one hit over the game's final four innings.
Â
Olison (7-18) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
Olivia Miller and
Alainah Felton combined to surrender six more runs in relief as the Braves were unable to slow the Lions' offense.
Â
Alcorn (13-31) managed just one hit, that being a
Layla Watts double in the fourth frame.
Â
The Purple and Gold now turn its attention to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play when hosting the UAPB Golden Lions to Alcorn Softball Complex on Thursday, April 23. Due to inclement weather, the series has been moved up a day with a doubleheader taking place Thursday at 2 p.m.
