Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Alcorn State University suffered its first setback of the 2026 season Saturday evening, falling to the University of Southern Mississippi, 49-3, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Renasant Stadium in front of 26,246 fans.
The Braves (1-1) struck first after the defense created an early turnover, but Southern Miss responded with 49 unanswered points to earn the victory. Alcorn finished with 223 yards of total offense, including 104 rushing and 119 passing, while Southern Miss accumulated 543 total yards — 317 on the ground and 226 through the air.
Alcorn's defense provided an early spark when
Elijah Ruffin intercepted Southern Miss quarterback Ethan Hampton midway through the first quarter. Ruffin returned the interception 32 yards to the Southern Miss 9-yard line, giving the Braves their best starting field position of the afternoon.
The Braves turned the takeaway into points four plays later when
Kenyon Bowyer connected on a 22-yard field goal with 5:52 remaining in the opening quarter, putting Alcorn ahead, 3-0.
Southern Miss answered on its ensuing possession, marching 75 yards on 10 plays before Steven Robinson scored on a two-yard run with 2:29 remaining in the quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 7-3 advantage.
Alcorn moved into Southern Miss territory on its next possession before being forced to punt, and the Golden Eagles extended their lead early in the second quarter. Hampton connected with Mario Sanders for a 38-yard touchdown to complete an 11-play, 80-yard drive and push Southern Miss ahead, 14-3.
The Braves responded with their best sustained offensive drive of the game. Alcorn marched 60 yards on 11 plays, converting a third-and-16 when
Jaylon Tolbert found
Malachi Augustus for a 35-yard completion that moved the Braves inside the Southern Miss 15-yard line. However, the drive ended when Tolbert was intercepted at the Southern Miss 3-yard line with 4:49 remaining in the half.
Southern Miss then drove 97 yards on 13 plays, with Jamarice Wilder scoring from two yards out with eight seconds remaining to send the Golden Eagles into halftime with a 21-3 advantage.
The Golden Eagles took control after the break, scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter. Robinson capped the opening possession of the half with a three-yard touchdown run before Wilder added a 29-yard score following an Alcorn turnover. Robinson later scored his third touchdown of the game on a two-yard run, extending the Southern Miss lead to 42-3 entering the fourth quarter.
Southern Miss added its final score on Robert Henderson's one-yard touchdown run with 11:11 remaining.
Tolbert completed 15-of-22 passes for 119 yards for the Braves.
Tyree Kelly led Alcorn's receiving corps with three catches for 39 yards, while Augustus' lone reception went for 35 yards.
Nolan Chambers added two receptions for 16 yards.
On the ground,
Joshua Tate led Alcorn with 33 yards on eight carries, while
Ernest Temple added 32 yards on nine attempts. The Braves finished with 104 rushing yards on 35 attempts.
Defensively, Timothy Jasper led Alcorn with a game-high 13 tackles, including six solo stops, while
Dillon Crowell recorded 11 tackles. Ruffin finished with eight tackles in addition to his 32-yard interception return, and
Teddy Roby added seven tackles.
Kameron Brown finished with six stops.
The Braves forced two Southern Miss turnovers. In addition to Ruffin's interception,
Mahamadou Diarra forced a fourth-quarter fumble, although Southern Miss recovered the loose ball. Alcorn's defense was credited with five pass breakups.
Alcorn finished with 11 first downs and converted 5-of-14 third-down opportunities. The Braves held the football for 28:39 and were 1-for-2 in red-zone scoring opportunities. Southern Miss recorded 32 first downs and held a 31:21 advantage in time of possession.

First Quarter
- Alcorn received the opening kickoff, but Southern Miss intercepted Tolbert on the Braves' first possession.

- Ruffin then intercepted Hampton on Southern Miss' next possession and returned it 32 yards to the Golden Eagles' 9-yard line.
- Bowyer converted a 22-yard field goal with 5:52 remaining, giving Alcorn a 3-0 lead.
- Southern Miss answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by Robinson's two-yard touchdown run at the 2:29 mark.
