Class Attendance Policy
All student-athletes are
required to attend their scheduled classes each semester with the exception of days specified for University sponsored travel or documented medical reasons. Before scheduled travel, student-athletes are responsible for making necessary arrangements with professors to complete any missed assignments. The Athletic Department has
zero tolerance for excessive absences. It is imperative that student-athletes attend scheduled classes regularly unless excused for official athletic competition or documented medical reasons.
Each student-athlete will be given copies of an Athletic Travel Excusal Letter. The travel letter will be generated by each sport and the head coach and/or designee will present the travel excusal letter(s) directly to the student-athlete who will then be responsible for delivering the letter(s) to the appropriate professors.
If the classroom attendance policy is violated, the following actions will be taken:
- Offense 1: One (1) Documented Unexcused Absence: This policy mandates that once a student-athlete acquires one documented unexcused absence in a single class, the student-athlete will be required to meet with the coordinator of student-athlete services and/or the associate athletic director and the head coach to address the importance of attending class and potential punishment. The student-athlete’s parent/guardian will be contacted during this meeting to inform them of the problem. This meeting will serve as a verbal reprimand to the student-athlete. The student-athlete will also be asked to sign a statement of commitment as it pertains to class attendance.
- Offense 2: Two (2) Documented Unexcused Absences: This policy mandates that once a student-athlete acquires two documented unexcused absences in a single class, the student-athlete will be suspended from a full day of conditioning, practice and from the next scheduled contest (not allowed to travel and not allowed to dress out). The student-athlete will be notified immediately by the coordinator of student-athlete services and/or the associate athletic director and his/her head coach. The athletic director will be informed on the matter.
- Offense 3: Three (3) Documented Unexcused Absences: This policy mandates that once a student-athlete acquires three documented unexcused absences in a single class, the student-athlete will be suspended from two full days of conditioning, practice, and from the next two scheduled contest (not allowed to travel and not allowed to dress out). The student-athlete will be notified immediately by the coordinator of student-athlete services and/or the associate athletic director and his/her head coach. The athletic director will be informed on the matter. The student-athlete will also be automatically classified as an at-risk student-athlete and mandated to participate in the Weekly Academic Requirements (WAR).
- Offense 4: Four (4) Documented Unexcused Absences: In addition to the penalty for offense three shown above, a 10% reduction of the athletic scholarship will be imposed the following academic semester for in-season student-athletes; out-of-season infractions shall constitute a 20% reduction of the athletic scholarship. Normal NCAA appeal procedures will apply to this reduction of grant-in-aid (bearing will be granted prior to reduction).
Please be aware that penalties for offenses that occur in a student-athlete's off-season which result in suspension from practice and a contest will be served in the following season (next available contest). No exceptions. Please be mindful that attendance requirements as set forth by your individual instructors in their respective course syllabus that are more stringent than this policy supersede the requirements of this policy (i.e. course syllabus that states after 2nd unexcused absence you receive a grade of "F”).
