John Westbrook serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations at Alcorn State University. He joined the Braves’ administrative staff in September 2025, bringing with him nearly two decades of experience in intercollegiate athletics, communications, and operations management.
Prior to his return to Alcorn, Westbrook was named Director of Operations with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the fall of 2023, where he oversaw the day-to-day operational functions of the league office. His appointment marked a return to the conference after previously serving as Director of Strategic Communications.
Before rejoining the SWAC, Westbrook worked in transportation operations with Ashley Furniture Corporation. His diverse professional background also includes a successful tenure at Elizabeth City State University, where he served as Sports Information and Marketing Director. During his time at ECSU, Westbrook directed communications for all athletic programs and spearheaded marketing initiatives that elevated the visibility of Viking Athletics locally, regionally, and nationally.
Under his leadership, ECSU Athletics launched a redesigned official website that drew more than 100,000 page hits in its first two months. Westbrook also generated more than $200,000 in sponsorships and in-kind support, including partnerships with Chick-fil-A of Elizabeth City and Albemarle Plantation Sound Golf Links. He also negotiated a $30,000 game guarantee with North Carolina Central University to benefit the football program’s operational budget.
Westbrook was instrumental in introducing video and audio streaming for football, volleyball, basketball, and softball contests while expanding the department’s social media presence. In February 2018, he was named head coach of the ECSU golf program, leading the team to a fifth-place conference finish and coaching senior Tyler Futrell to CIAA All-Tournament and All-Conference honors. His accomplishments earned him the 2018 ECSU Coach of the Year award.
His earlier professional experience includes serving as Sports Information Director at Virginia State University, Assistant Manager for Media Relations at Jackson State University, and Coordinator for Media Relations at Alabama State University. Throughout his career, Westbrook has managed communications for a wide range of sports, coordinated media coverage, and supported championship operations within the SWAC.
A native of Houston, Mississippi, Westbrook began his career in sports information at Jackson State University in 2006. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing from Jackson State University.
