Tonya Edwards and the Alcorn State Lady Braves swept through the state of Alabama in the SWAC with weekend wins over Alabama A&M Saturday and Alabama State Monday night in Montgomery.
The Lady Braves beat Alabama State 75-69 Monday as Meridian junior guard Kiara Ruffin
made 5 of 6 free throws with 1:04 left and Dallas, Texas native Angelina Curtie made
both free throws with 9.1 seconds left to beat back a Lady Hornet rally. The win pushed ASU's record
to 6-11 overall and 5-3 in the SWAC.
ASU won the game from the charity lane as Stewart went six for six, Breedlove four for four,
Richmond six for eight, Curtie four for four and Ruffin eight for nine.
The Lady Braves led 35-24 at halftime as Ruffin and Stewart had 10 at the break. Richmond
of Toronto, Canada had seven at halftime.
The Lady Braves were up by as many as 20 points, but Tanika Jackson led a great come
back as they got to within 3 points with 56 seconds to play. Jackson scored 26 of her 28 in
the last half.
Ruffin led all scorers with 29 points, 19 in the last half. Three other Lady Braves scored in
double figures as Renelle Richmond and Tiffany Stewart each tallied 12 and Sharnika
Breedlove of Nashville scored ten.
The Lady Braves will host Southern on Saturday at 2:30 PM. Admission is free.
