ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- Needing a quality win to keep pace in the
conference standings, the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils defeated the
Alcorn State Braves 91-83 Saturday night at the R.W. Harrison Complex.
Leading the charge for the Delta Devils (10-15, 9-3) was Greenwood native
Falando Jones, who finished with 25 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four
steals. Senior Orlando Jones set a career high with 16 rebounds along with 18
points. D'Angelo Jackson tallied 16 points while Terrence Joyner had 15 points,
two assists and four steals off the bench.
For Alcorn State (3-19, 3-9), Jamar Ragland had team highs of 18 points and
10 rebounds while Marquiz Baker tallied 15 points and two steals. Kendrick
McDonald had 14 points, four assists and three steals while Korey Sanders and
Willis Brownlee each finished with 13 points. Sanders added nine rebounds.
MVSU opened the game on a 12-0 run over the initial 2:17 and continued to
press both on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. The Delta Devils
built an 18-point lead at several instances before taking a 48-33 lead into
intermission.
The second half saw Alcorn State score 50 points in the period, shooting 68
percent from the floor. But the Braves could not overcome the first half
deficit.
For the game, MVSU shot 41.9 percent from the floor (including 7-of-25 from
three-point range). MVSU out rebounded the Braves 43-35 while forcing 27 Alcorn
State turnovers.
