Senior designated hitter Kirby Perdomo of Santo Domingo clobbered 2 homeruns and drove in five runs to lead the Alcorn State baseball Braves to a doubleheader sweep of Illinois at Springfield 9-7 in the first game and 16-1 in the nightcap at Alcorn State.
The wins were the Braves 1 and 2 of the season after starting out 0-5. The 2-5 Braves will meet Miss State on March 1st, Tuesday, in Starkville at 5PM. The Braves had 29 hits in the combined games, outscoring the Prairie Stars 25 to eight in the double header. ASU had 6 errors in the loss game to UIS Friday but kept it down to 3 in game 1 Saturday and 4 in game 2.
Troy Williams picked up his first win of the season to even his record at 1-1. He pitched five innings giving up three earned runs. Reliever
Harrison Gary of McDonough, Georgia pitched the last four innings to earn his first save of the season. Paul Phillips picked up his first loss and is 0-1.
After falling behind 5-2 after five, the Braves scored 5 to take the lead for good. Perdomo had a run scoring double scoring Antoin Morales of Mexico and
Angel Rosa later doubled in Jann Butler of Moss Point and
Kenny Rowan of Jackson. The Braves wrapped it up early in game 2 in the second when they scored four runs after the Prairie Stars scored one in the top of the inning. Butler was rewarded for his leadoff triple when Eduardo Gonzalez singled him in. Gonzalez later scored on an error and
Jordan Boston and Brandon Hollins each had run scoring singles.
Ten men went to the plate in the fifth when ASU scored 7 runs, highlighted by the three run blast by Perdomo. ASU collected 6 hits in the inning. The Braves relievers made sure that winning pitcher
Mundo Sanchez’s efforts were not wasted as he went four innings giving up only 3 hits and only 1 earned run. Relievers
Joseph Camp of Roswell, New Mexico and
Terence Stubbs of Brooklyn combined for five innings pitched with three hits, four strikeouts and no runs allowed.
