LADY BRAVES BREAK LADY JAGUARS WINNING STREAK

Alcorn State junior point guard Kiara Ruffin of Meridian, Ms. made two free throws with nine seconds left and survived two missed layups by the Lady Jags to upset them 54-52 in overtime Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La. The Lady Braves avenged a 52-46 loss to Southern earlier in the SWAC season, upping their SWAC record to 11-5 and to 12-13 overall. The Lady Jags saw their 12 game winning streak snapped as they are now 14-2 in the SWAC. Overall they are 17-9. In winning their fourth game in a row, the ‘Dynamic Duo,’ guards Ruffin and Carolinsia Crumbly of Laurel combined for 37 points of the 54 scored by the Lady Braves. Crumbly scored 19 to lead the attack while Ruffin followed closely with 18. Sharnika Breedlove played a major part in the win as well netting six of six attempted at the free throw line along with 12 rebounds. She was very strong on the boards pulling down 12 rebounds. Rosemann Ambroise had seven rebounds. The score was tied up at 46 all after regulation and ASU outscored the Lady Jags eight to six in overtime. Crumbly scored two three point baskets in the five minute period while Ruffin’s two free throws provided for the Lady Braves margin of victory. The Lady Braves will end the SWAC season on the road with the chance to possibly end up second in conference play. They face Prairie View, who beat them at Alcorn, Thursday in Prairie View and Texas Southern Saturday in Houston, Texas. The PVSU battle tips off at 5:30 and will be carried on WPRL 91.7 on the Alcorn State radio network.
