ALCORN STATE, MS – The East Division leading Alcorn State Braves face the West Division leading Southern University Jaguars in a SWAC showdown Tuesday at 6:00pm in a single game in Alcorn State, MS.
Coach Barrett Rey's Braves did what General Sherman did to Atlanta by sweeping Jackson State the past weekend in Jackson. The Braves won all three games played while pushing their East Division record up to 13-4. JSU's fell to 10-8, one-half game behind MVSU's 10-7 conference mark.
Southern won two of three at home against Prairie View to increase their West leading record to 13 and 5. Second place Grambling in the West is 10-5.
ASU's Steve Easter went the distance in picking up his fifth win in seven decisions, most wins in the SWAC. ASU beat JSU in that one 4-1 on two homeruns in the tenth inning, by Kenny Rowan and Eduardo Gonzalez.
ASU won both games against JSU Saturday by the scores of 6-2 and 6-5. ASU came from behind to win the 6-5 Saturday second contest, the same as it did in the Friday 4-1 win.
ASU comes in at 15-20 overall while Southern is 21-13. Southern has the number one rated offense in the SWAC, batting .316 as a team compared to ASU's .260. JSU leads in team pitching with a 4.42 ERA while ASU's teams ERA is 6.55.
Southern brings in the leading hitter in the SWAC in Frazier Hall with a .422 average and also the conference lead in hits, RBI's, homeruns and total bases.
Kilby Perdomo leads the Braves with a .385 average and also in RBI's, hits and total bases. Al Jackson bats .314 for the Braves and Eduardo Gonzalez .310. Perdomo also leads in homers with five.
The hard hitting Jaguars have eight regulars, besides Hall, batting over .300. William Marrero at .344 with six homers and 31 ribbies compliments Hall. Hall has nine homeruns.
ASU's probable starters for Tuesday are either Terence Stubbs at 0-1 or Brent Blaum at 1-4.
The Braves will host East rival Alabama A&M Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon and in a single game Sunday at 1:00pm at the Willie 'Rat' McGowan Stadium.
