BRAVES WIN SEVEN IN A ROW

       Alcorn State's Antolin Morales smashed a grand slam homerun in the

bottom of the eighth inning to power the Braves to an 11-4 SWAC win

over and  a weekend sweep oF Alabama A&M Sunday at Alcorn State,MS.

 

      The win was ASU's seventh in a row and gives the Braves a 16-4 SWAC East division

record and a three game lead over second place Ms. Valley State. The Braves are just one

game under .500 at 19-20 and will try to even it up facing West leading  Southern

University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Tuesday.

 

      Cole Vicars of Terre Haute went the distance to push his record up to

three and one. He gave up only six hits, struck out six and only two of the four

runs scored against him were earned.

 

      ASU scored three in the first inning thanks to two stolen bases by Al Hollins

of Yazoo City, and one each by Jann Butler and Kenny Rowan of Jackson. Kilby

Perdomo's sacrifice fly scored Hollins and Eduardo Gonzalez singled in Butler

and Rowan.

 

      ASU catcher Steve Loupe's sacrifice fly in the second  inning sent Ryant

Piper across home plate, he had tripled; and the Braves scored two more in the third

when Perdomo scored on a wild pitch and Butler on a Gonzalez single.

 

The Bulldogs scored two in the fourth after two outs on back-to-back doubles

by Deon Hall and James  Brown. They then plated two more in the fifth on a sacrifice

fly by Chris Thomas and a run producing double by Sanchez Tucker.

 

      ASU added a single run in the seventh as pinch runner Justin Barney

scored on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly.

 

      The Braves Piper opened the bottom of the eighth with a double, Jordan

Boston reached on a throwing error and Hollins, who had five stolen bases

on the day, beat out a bunt for a single. This set the stage for Morales grandslam

which was his first home run of the season.

 

      The Braves stole nine bases in the game giving them 15 in the three

game series. Hollins entered the series with 22 and now tops the SWAC with 29 thefts.

 

      The Bulldogs are now 4-14 in the SWAC East and are eight and 29 overall.

 

      The Braves will host Alabama State next weekend with the first game

on Saturday at 12 noon. The Sunday start is 1PM in Willie McGowan Stadium.
